On This Day in 1947 -

Sarasota held its first annual Labor Day Regatta on the bay. Unfortunately Sarasota lost. The regatta did far better, however, and continues to be held as a celebration of the end of summer.

Oaklands-Woodlawn Cemetery

The Florida Mortgage and Investment Company deeded five acres in 1905 to Trustees John Mays, Willis G.P. Washington, Lewis Colson, Campbell Mitchell and J. P. Carter for a "colored" cemetery. The land was platted in 1910 as Oaklands Cemetery. For a few years in the late 1920s the cemetery was known as Pepperhill. By 1929 it was called Woodlawn.more »

Leagues of Their Own

When Sarasota’s black children dreamed of playing professional baseball, before Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, their models were players in the state and national Negro leagues. The local teams were the Nine Devils and the Sarasota Tigers.
