Historic Designations

Sarasota County Designation Marker

Historic Designation markers (bronze colored plaques) are placed on residential homes and commercial buildings within the City limits of Sarasota. To be eligible, the structures are required to meet criteria similar to what the National Register of Historic Places utilizes to designate a structure as being historically significant. Both the cities of Sarasota and Venice have comparable designation programs.

Featured Designations

John & Mary Erbs House

The John and Mary Erbs Home, c. 1925, is located at 651 Ohio Place within the Osprey Ave. Subdivision of the Laurel Park neighborhood of the City of Sarasota. The house is a good example of the Craftsman Bungalow style associated with construction during the Florida Land Boom of the 1920's.

J.J. and Maude Murphy House

The J.J. and Maude Murphy House, located at 1263 12th Street, was originally located at 1522 North Tamiami Trail, in the Valencia Terrace Subdivision. Both the Craftsman Style Bungalow and the one-story wood frame garage were originally constructed for single family domestic use, but in 1953, they were converted into office and storage space. In 2006, the new owner had the structures moved and were refurbished into residential use as her home.

The Westmore Tenant House & Smith/Freeman Home is located at 1913 Datura Street in DeSota Park Subdivision.

The Mediterranean Revival/Spanish Eclectic Style was the most popular style built during Florida and Sarasota's Land Boom.
