Postcards: Sarasota History
The Hotel Sarasota was our first 'skyscraper.' It opened at the Northeast corner of Main Street and Palm Avenue in early 1925. It was built by W.H. Pipcorn of Milwaukee, and he was the first man to pay $1,000 a front foot for land in the business section of Sarasota. This was the height of the Florida Land Boom, and prices were skyrocketing. Today, the building still exists, however it has been radically altered in appearance.
